Birthstone August

Birthstone August

The birthstone for August is the peridot, a beautiful olive green. It ranges from a light lime to a dark green, almost emerald. In the past, peridot was often confused with emerald, but ultimately, they all remain one color: green.

Birthstone peridot

The peridot is formed in volcanoes. This birthstone, therefore, originates from deep within the earth. During its journey from the earth's core to the surface, it easily loses its gemstone quality. Not only that, but also its color, luster, and transparency. Consequently, it also loses its beauty. The fact that the peridot's green glow doesn't even change in artificial light makes it extra special. Once a month, it's also necessary to clean the peridot. You can do this in demineralized water. Afterward, the stone needs to recharge. You can do this by placing the stone in the sun or on rock crystal. The most important sources of the peridot are Burma, the United States, Egypt, Russia, Ireland, and China.

August birthstone meaning

The peridot represents inner growth, validity, self-confidence, nature, and tranquility. It's also called the sun stone because of its intense olive green color. This green strengthens your heart and is good for your liver. In the past, peridot was believed to protect against evil and nightmares. It was also said to help with asthma and fever. Placing this birthstone on your head enhances your intuition or your heart for deeper meditation. Wearing the peridot close to your head, for example, as an earring, promotes faster reactions and a clear mind.

August Birthstone History

Pirates were already fond of this gemstone. They used it as an amulet against all forms of evil. They also believed that the peridot, combined with gold, would protect them during the night. The birthstone was also set in cups from which medicines were drunk, supposedly increasing the potency of the medicines. Under the piece of the August birthstone, you can see that the emerald was once confused with the peridot. Now, historians also believe that Cleopatra's famous emerald collection were peridots, not emeralds.
