Several theories exist regarding the opal's name. The most likely is the Sanskrit one, upala meaning "colored stone." However, in Greek, opal means "to see a change," which may refer to the birthstone's changing colors.

In the Middle Ages, wealthy blonde girls wore the stone in their hair to preserve the light color of their locks. In those days, it was believed that opal allowed its owner to become invisible when necessary. Opal brings beauty, happiness, and success to its wearer.
The Romans called the opal the "queen of gems." For the Romans, the opal symbolized purity and hope, but according to the Greeks, this stone had entirely different powers. They believed the gemstone could predict the future. Other tribes, such as those from the Andamooka region of South Australia, also had a unique mythology for this stone. They believed the Creator had come to earth on a rainbow and transformed all the stones into rainbow-colored opals.
